Domain Name System

Below is an extract from Wikipedia on the definition:

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical decentralized naming system for computers, services, or any resource connected to the Internet or a private network. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating entities.

Most prominently, it translates more readily memorized domain names to the numerical IP addresses needed for the purpose of locating and identifying computer services and devices with the underlying network protocols. By providing a worldwide, distributed directory service, the Domain Name System is an essential component of the functionality of the Internet, and has been in use since the 1980s.

While searching around for information on the domain name system I found an excellent set of videos on the subject.

So, I thought it would be a good idea to showcase these videos from the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford.

We are so used to utilising technology today that the majority of us don’t give a second thought to what any of it means or where it is leading to. The videos listed here have had so few viewings that I think it illustrates the point.

So, hopefully by putting them here it will give them a much needed boost.
